What is a Mantra?

A mantra is a repeated incantation, a sacred verbal formula chanted to expand consciousness, promote spirituality, and activate harmony and creativity. Of Sanskrit origin, mantra means "to set free the chattering mind".  To chant a mantra out loud is to focus all of one's awareness on a powerful sound that sweeps away random thoughts and creates peaceful mental vitality. In the words of French doctor Alfred Tomatis, chanting is "nutrition for the brain".

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is the ancient Indian practice of musically chanted prayer. Chants, or mantras, may be sung in private or with a group in call-and-response fashion. During Kirtan loud, rhythmic mantras are repeatedly sung to clarify the mind, concentrate on expanding spiritual awareness, and participate in offering ourselves to the immense consciousness that encompasses us all. This simple practice is said to alter brain wave patterns, relax the body, and release emotional energy. No musical talent is necessary; one needs only a desire to take part in the transformative power of sound.

Many of the chants in MANTRA-SACRED CHANTS are sung by New Orleans' spicy Kirtan group
Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band. For a list of their CDs and upcoming tour schedule, their site will help with intonation of this exciting music that's easy to sing with.
